Stray Animal Intake
We are contracted to hold strays from rural and unincorporated areas within Black Hawk County, the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls, and approved stray holds for the cities of Independence, Waverly, and Denver.
Stray animals found outside these areas should be reported to your local animal control agency or law enforcement.
Lost a Pet?
If you are missing a pet from our contracted areas, please check Iowa Pet Alert's
FOUND pets
immediately. All stray animals brought to CBHS are posted there.
Please verify in person that a pet is yours. See below for information on reclaiming your pet.
Owners are also encouraged to post their pet on Iowa Pet Alert's
LOST pets
to help spread the word and increase the chance of being reunited. We also recommend checking with your local city police department or animal control agency, as they may have information about recently found animals.
Found a Pet?
If you find a pet and wish to keep the pet in your custody while trying to locate the owner, please post their photo and information on Iowa Pet Alert's
FOUND pets.
If you find a stray pet, please call your local Animal Control agency or you may bring stray animals to Cedar Bend Humane Society.
Stray domestic animals from our contracted service areas may be brought to CBHS at no charge without an appointment during daily intake hours (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.). Contracted areas include rural and unincorporated areas within Black Hawk County, the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls, and approved stray holds for the cities of Independence, Waverly, and Denver.
Residents from the City of Independence, Denver, and Waverly must contact an Independence Police Officer at 319-334-2520. Strays from Independence cannot be brought directly to CBHS by the public.
Reclaiming Your Pet
Pet owners can reclaim their dogs and cats at the CBHS Intake Center:

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily
Owners will be asked to bring a valid ID and provide proof of ownership, rabies vaccination records, and city licensing information when reclaiming their pet.
Applicable vaccination, boarding, and city fees may apply. Fees vary depending on your pet’s needs and length of stay. Please contact our team for more information about applicable fees.
